Obstacles And Terrain

Terrain Types

There are only two types of terrain: destructable and indestructable. The only difference between them is that destructable terrain can be affected by bombs, and indestructable terrain cannot. In all other ways they are identical.

General Obstacles

The most fundamental obstacles are implicit in the layout of the levels: gaps, and walls. Gaps are breaks in platforms which will cause Munchkins to fall. Walls are clumps of terrain that Munchkins cannot climb, and force them to stop. Both kinds of obstacles can be surmounted with a variety of gizmos and Munchkin abilities

Neither obstacle causes Munchkin death directly, but both can force Munchkins into undesirable locations or situations. In particular, any time a Munchkin is forced off the screen on any side but the right, it is killed.

Traps

Traps are explicit obstacles that can appear throughout the levels. There are two basic types: triggered and automatic. Automatic traps activate at regular intervals, regardless of where Munchkins are. Triggered traps only activate when a Munchkin moves to a particular spot, and can only be triggered every so often.

  • Death Rays are automatic traps that periodically fire a beam that instantly incinerates all Munchkins it connects with. The beam instantly fills the ray between the trap and the first terrain obstacle, and is about one Munchkin thick. They appear attached to indestructable terrain, and are oriented perpendicular to the point of attachment (and thus can fire in any of the eight directions).
  • Suckers are activated traps that appear slightly raised plates on level, indestructable terrain. When activated by a Munchkin stepping on the plate, a tube appears that traps the Munchkin and sucks it into oblivion. Suckers can only affect one Munchkin at a time - while active, other Munchkins can pass through them safely. Runners are fast enough to avoid suckers.

More traps may be added later, but they will have similar functionality to Death Rays and Suckers.
